Mariyapuram, a small village in Geesugondamandal in the district, is treading the path of developmentwith in 9 months period , thanks to the collective efforts of the villagers.
Located just 2 km away from Geesugondamandal headquarters abutting the Warangal-Narsampet road, Mariyapuram Gram Panchayat was formed in 1995 after it was carved out of Ookal Gram Panchayat. There are a total of 248 families in the village. The residents who used to visit Gangadevipally, which gained world-wide recognition as the ideal village, also resolved to transform their village into an ideal one. As part of the efforts, the villagers constructed Individual Sanitary Latrine (ISL) in each house in 2016 and ensured their usage too. Besides this, they constructed soak pits for each house (197), and imposed a ban on use of plastic.
After it was made a gram panchayat, a complete ban was imposed on sale and consumption of liquor in the village. In order to achieve overall development, the villagers unanimously elected Allam Bali Reddy as Sarpanch. As part of the Haritha Haram programme, a total of 13,209 saplings were planted in the village, and majority of them have grown into trees now.
Purified water is also being provided at a water kiosk in the village. Though potable drinking water is supplied to each house under Mission Bhagiratha scheme, purified water of 20 litres is also being provided at a water kiosk for just Rs 2. The villagers are also strictly into solid waste management by setting up segregation points for wet waste and dry waste, and maintaining a dump yard. They have also constructed three graveyards in the village. A team of officials from Jal Shakthi Abhiyan, who visited Mariyapuram, appreciated the efforts of the residents and said an ideal village was in the making.
Secretary at Chief Minister's Office (CMO) Smita Sabharwal also paid a visit to the village after learning about the developmental activities taken up at the village, and said Mariyapuram had all facilities to become an ideal village. Minister for Panchayat Raj and Rural Development ErrabelliDayakar Rao had also visited the village and allocated special funds for its development. "We are ensuring 100 per cent tax collection. Members of self-help groups (SHGs) are paying interests and repaying loan regularly. A bank (Corporation) is also functioning at the village,"
